One of the best runs in Mayrhofen is the Ahorn abfart. This may sound disgusting but in actual fact it’s a dream: the longest (5km’s), most panoramic and challenging route in resort.
It takes you from the top of the Ahorn to the valley station just 100m from the centre of town! From the Arctic Disco, follow the blue piste down parallel to the chairlift, and then keep going as it turns into a red (a proper red, at that!). At the bottom of the piste instead of bearing left and getting on the chair, keep going – all the way to the valley floor (pausing only to admire the view and take on a glÜwein at Weisenhof mountain hut which offers splendid views along the Ziller valley. A life-affirming descent of 3,700 feet in around 15 mins – that’s going downhill faster than Chelsea FC – then catch the 150 man gondolier back up for another go!
