HIGHWAY TO HELL

Snowbombing is more than just a party…Everyone knows Snowbombing is a great party in a fantastic resort, with a sublime terrain park, but don’t make the mistake of thinking Snowbombing only appeals to those who prefer sound systems to snow and partying all-night to playing-in-the-powder all day long.

The last few years have seen the infamous Highway to Hell demo session take place in the mighty Vans Penken Park, with bucket loads of Pro-Snowboaders sending Snowbombers dizzy with the sheer amount of crazy spins, flips and rails they threw themselves off for the latter park of the week.

Then last year saw the introduction of the Jackson Weaver Pro-Am. This new format encouraged Snowbombers to hook up with a Pro-Snowboarder and take to the park. The nervs of the organisers were unfounded as one Snowbomber even attempted a back-flip and came away unscathed.

For 2010 the format is yet to be decided, but expect exciting developments at the park for Snowbombings 11th year that will again see the return of Europes finest Snowboarders hitting the huge jumps to keep all Snowbombers in search of gravity buse happy!

The Weaver Jackson Pro-Am Invitational, Snowbombing 2009words by Rebecca Evans (Method)

Snowbombing is over for another year and it’s a sad state of affairs. All we’ve got left is some very good, very hazy memories, the tattered remains of fancy dress and a taste of Jaeger that just won’t go away. As I sit here with headphones blasting I’ll recount the events of the final day up at the park: a tale of pro-riders, pro-drinkers, conga lines and craziness.

In a break from the norm, this year saw the first ever “Weaver Jackson Pro-Am Invitational” come to the Vans Penken Park. Plucky young Snowbombers got paired with puzzled pro-snowboarders and together, tried their darndest to impress the judges. The concept was simple, each rider would take a run through the course with his Snowbomber in tow and the pair with the best tricks, most over-ambitious attempts at tricks or just best anything the judges could think of, would receive on-the-spot cash prizes with the chance to win a surf holiday for the best overall team. On the mic on the GoneBoarding Terrace we were graced with the dulcet tones of Jon Weaver and Henry Jackson who, dressed in full golfing attire, really put the “Pro” in “Pro-Am.” Riders like James Carr, Billy Nielsen and Peter Koenig were throwing down backflips and frontflips left, right and centre and their new riding buddies stepped up to the challenge and did them proud.

When everyone realized they hadn’t had a drink in the last 20 minutes, the contest was all wrapped up and it was time for the riders and their young protégés to head back to the terrace for a well deserved beer to be washed down with 4 or 5 Jaeger’s. But it wasn’t over- it was only just beginning. Thanks to a serious amount of peer-pressure and egging-on from our MC’s it was then time for the Snowbombers to show us how afternoon raving should be done. With fake-facial hair in abundance, the now well-oiled Snowbombers set about seeing off Snowbombing in style. The Wax Wreckaz took care of the beats and before long piggy-back races, conga lines and running man contests were all going down while Christian at the Grillhof handed out free crates of Beck’s like he had shares in the stuff.

As the sun set on Snowbombing 2009 the masses headed down the hill leaving a trail of empty bottles and broken hearts behind them. Thanks to the MC’s, the riders and most of all, the Snowbombers- you were awesome.

The GONEboarding Terrace was the perfect spot to watch the pro's and take part in the GoneBoarding Wacky Races - with ample beer on tap and pizzas to match the snow: deep, and crisp and even with the occasional slice of salami...

HIGHWAY TO HELL 2008With a pro session attracting more and more teams of internationally respected riders, whisper it lightly, "Snowbombing is attended by some pretty fly board scene faces". Pro-rider Vicky Miller,

"Snowbombing is one of the greatest weeks of my season: great bands, mental people and a snowboard comp. that rocks”. Hotzone.tv agree: The ‘Highway to Hell’ is one of the funniest contests I have ever seen, it takes place in Europe’s best Snowpark, our team rider Benny Wetscher won last years H2H. It was a big step in his career”.

When names like Method nail their colours to the mast, you just know there’s gotta be more to the Snowbombing crew than outlandish fancy dress parties and DJ culture: "Method officially LOVES Snowbombing; with the prospect of empty pistes, epic snow conditions, good vibes, happy people and the ‘Highway to Hell’ competition in the Vans Park; the only thing you've got left to worry about is packing your party pants."

Best Trick: Niki Korpela (FIN) - Who at 16 years old was impressing everyone all weekend and on the day landed a perfect one-footed 360.

A Snowy Friday saw the competition postponed apart from a few rail sessions, but the mighty Fingerlickin DJ Scott Nixon rose spirits by tearing it up on the decks with a breaks set to remember, making the terrace the place to be! In typical Snowbomber fashion no-one seemed to notice the wintery skies as they boogied away until closing!

The good weather arrived on Saturday along with the crowds who eagerly anticipated the second installment of Highway to Hell. None would have been disappointed as they saw riders from across Europe tear up the slopes, spinning themselves silly on the massive kickers of the Vans Penken Park (thanks Stefan)!

The awesome level of Snowbombing really gave the crowd something to WOW about as they sat comfortably on the terrace sipping Jaeger Tea and listening to the local hip-hop and breaks masters from Innsbruck the 'Wax Wreckaz'! The day finished with Ride my Pimp contest where lucky females got to ride the back of Pro-Snowboarders down a special course!

Warm sunny days, fun in the slushy park, a festival atmosphere all week long and fancy dress - what more could we ask for? Take it easy now party people, see you next year!
