SPRING SNOWComing to Mayrhofen in the spring has several advantages, the most important of all being the snowfall. Those who came to Snowbombing 2005 may remember having their doubts as they arrived in the resort after being greeted with beautiful sunny skies and green fields, but as soon as everyone hit the mountain they were treated to some excellent conditions whilst still getting a tan! Then half way through the week Mayrhofen was blessed with one of the biggest snow dumps of the season, making skiing and boarding after a heavy night benefit from some very soft landings!
See the snow fall stats below!

THE PISTEOur Snowbombing Super Ski Pass offers amazing value, allowing access to the entire Zillertal Super Ski Area - the Glacier, the Vans Penken Park, 639 km of piste and 167 lifts and gondolas.

Perfect for skiing, carving and boarding or just exploring the massive valley and enjoying the views. It offers a perfect area for beginners and intermediates, with 157km of piste and 48 lifts, ensuring that you never get bored of the same runs! The ski pass can be purchased through this website, on a very flexible basis, making it great if you just want to have a go.
Mayrhofen is without doubt one of the best resorts in the world - offering ski runs for every ability, fantastic infrastructure and ski lifts. Recent additions to the pisted area has led to Mayrhofen being awarded "Most Improved European Resort" with over 157km of piste adjoining itself with nearby Finkenberg & Lanarrsbach to total 639km. The famous
Zillertal Super Skipass gives you access to a staggering 10 resorts, 639kmof piste and and 167 lifts and cable cars which means that you could spend all week skiing different runs and still not cover the whole mountain by the end of the week! Winter presents itself in all its diversity around the Penken, Horberg, Rastkogel, Eggalm and Ahorn. With sunny and treeless summit slopes, broad carving areas and challengingly steep north slopes, fantastic deep snow areas with cornices, humps, powder runs and fun slopes there is something here for everybody - its a fantastic resort for cross country, abusing gravity or if you’re just getting into the sport - with a wide selection of runs plus the world class “Vans PenkenPark”, comprising quarter & half pipes (150m), a boarder cross course. Now with a new sponsor its even bigger with 4 separate lines, 10 kickers, 20 rails/boxes and 1 pipe. The epithet “quality” applies not only to the ski area but also to the constantly modernised ski lift facilities, the choice of huts and – above all – the legendary Zillertal après-ski.
GlacierQuite literally the coolest thing about the Zillertal area is the mighty Tux glacier -Austria's highest lifted point at a dizzying 3,475m which is
spectacularly reached by the highest double chairlift in the world! The glacier is a short bus ride away from Mayrhofen - offering fantastic piste and off-piste action all year round (as well as Europe’s highest half-pipe, which hosts many of Europes top teams throughout the summer months). The views over Italy, Germany and Austria are awesome and early April is the best time to visit this majestic mountain, perfect snow in abundance, yet not too cold. Each day at the glacier in April comes with a bronzed tan guarantee! 90-230km of perfectly groomed ski runs for all levels and abilities: skiing, carving, snowboarding, backcountry skiing. Don´t miss the ultimate Glacier Ski Trail boasting the region´s longest top-to-bottom ski trail - 12km long, 1,750m difference in altitude!
Vans Penken Park, MayrhofenThe SNOW PARK MAYRHOFEN offers the best options and every type of action for snowboarders and freestyle skiers. Mayrhofen has developed itself in the past years from an insider tip to a paradise for
snowboarders and freeskiers and is one of the top meeting spots in the Alps. Along with the exceptional freeskiing possibilities on powder days above and below the tree line, the Mayrhofen Cable Car Company offers this designated park. Because of the varying and quality jumps, it stands out from all other Tirol fun parks. A professional fun park shaper cares daily for the optimal conditions. Moreover it is the only park with its own 4 seater chair lift which is the exact same length as the park itself. The park will next season again be expanded for all partakers.

The HarakiriAnother jewel in Mayrhofens crown is the infamous 'Hari Kiri' - the steepest gradient prepared piste in Austria. This blackest of black runs is an eye-widening, throat-drying, trouser-staining 78 degrees! You'll find it (or can avoid it) on the North-facing, backside of the Penken, between red 3 and 5. Look for the skull and cross-bones piste marker (seriously)...or head for where the red snow leads to the yellow helicopter...!
Last year saw the opening of a 12 million pound investment on the Ahorn mountain. The new Ahornbahn is the biggest gondoler in Austria, carrying 160 people to the 2000 metre summit plateau. From here it's possible to ride the Ebenwald/ Abfaht trail - through steep forests and challenging slopes to the valley some 4000 feet below. Last season also saw the opening of a brand new 8-seated chairlift on Mt. Ahorn, the first with an automatically closing bar world wide. This is without doubt the best run in Mayrhofen...not least because it passes 4 bars en route and you end up outside Nikki's Schirmbar!

SKI RUNSMayrhofen provides an extensive range of piste for all abilities...
BeginnersMayrhofen enjoys an excellent reputation for it’s English speaking ski & board tuition. SMT instructors are the cream of the crop.
IntermediatesThere’s an abundance of long, w-i-d-e, open blues & reds awaiting.
AdvancedExplore some challenging valley descents, including steep mogul area’s in Mayrhofen. Before catching the free bus to the Tux glacier...Austria’s highest lifted point and sheer heaven for confident skiers & boarders: from here you are literally at the geographical centre of Europe and can gaze over three countries: Austria, Germany…and in the next valley, Italy!
HarakariChocolate box Mayrhofen’s hard centre…the “Harikiri” — the steepest pisted run anywhere in them darn hills - in Austria in fact!
Named after the Japanese suicide ritual performed by warriors who fell on their swords rather than allow themselves to be captured, this underwear-staining mutha boasts a 78 per cent incline — and if that means nothing to you, picture a ski jump ramp, which has the same grabbed-by-gravity gradient.
Unlike other extremely steep runs in the world, such as the famous “Wall” in Avoriaz or the Corbetts Couloir in Jackson Hole, the Harikiri is the only prepared run, which means you can expect a mogul-free ride all season, thanks to piste bashers and artificial snow machines.
According to our pal, Mel Kaindl, of the Mayrhofen Tourism Board, who referred to the colour-rating of the 400m-long run as “pitch-black” (“blue” being the easiest rating, followed by “red” for intermediates, then “black” for advanced skiers), even the preparation of the piste is tricky.
“We have to rope the piste basher to the ground with steel cables to prevent it from falling off the mountain.” Nice.
And as for skiers, she added: “Some simply turn around when they get to the top. Others proudly pose by the skull & crossbones sign to prove they’ve been there…before nervously traversing across the slope to take a different route down!
But she warned: “If you’re going to try the Harikiri, you need to be aware that once you’re on it, there’s no way out. If you fall, you’re going down. All the way down.”
In fact so common is the sight of giant bum slides, and freefalling bodies, that a favourite mountain pastime of Snowbombers is to sit at Hildes pizzeria with a beer, and watch the constant carnage on the opposite slope of death.
