Snowbombing 2010 > The Music
the music
Always scaling new heights - Snowbombing is ever-upping the alpine ante. Adding venues and musically evolving as a festival experience. From making our mark with a world class electronica showcase in the snow, we have embraced live music from a wide spectrum of international artists...
...from mainstream legends like Madness and Grandmaster Flash, cool contemporary acts like Dizzee Rascal and The Noisettes, cutting-edge talent like Kissy Sell Out and well-loved characters like The Cuban Brothers.

If there's one element of Snowbombing which other festivals covet, it's our venues. We transform the resort into one H-U-G-E party; from the high street to the surrounding mountain tops.
Forest Party"The Arctic Disco is a venue to knock your socks off each time you see it and the Forest stage is something quite special...I'd love to go back in 2010!" - Virtual FestivalsThe now famous Waldfestplatz (the amazing forest clearing where Madness and 2ManyDJs have played) will once again see the whole population of Mayrhofen donning their scarf's and winter warmers, and heading to the woods for a couple of amazing planned performances. Where better to party than in the middle of the woods in an Alpine mountain town. We turn the surrounding traditional Austrian shacks into bars and sausage factories, bring down a massive sound system and stadium size video screen and turn the old wooden stage (usually reserved for lederhosen-slapping dance troops and local weddings) into a pine-cradled platform for some of the world's best artists! |

Arctic DiscoCoolest party you'll ever attend"Keep your Full Moon parties and tell Ibiza to go jump, because once you've danced in an igloo on top of a mountain in the Austria Alps, nothing really comes close." - TNT Mag Sat on a plateau, high above Mayrhofen is a party venue unlike any other you will ever visit. Sculpted from eternal ice and built using snow; the Arctic Disco is a nocturnal destination without equal. A meandering corridor leads to two dance areas, a chill out space complete with fur rugs and a cinema screen, and three bars (the house speciality is a cocktail served in ice glasses). Outside star gazers sip warm drinks around a roaring fire and gaze in wonder at the unique atmospheric display viewable at this altitude (last time we stood and marveled at a 'moonbow'). Partying doesn't get any cooler. Literally. (The venue is open to all in the day but for the night events tickets need to be booked and paid for in addition to the entertainment wristbands.) |

Street PartyIts a roadblock!"The costumes really are something to behold, and the level of dedication is nothing short of madness. To come back to the drab streets of London, packed with frowning faces and an unnerving lack of fancy dress was a shock to the system and an absolute bore." - Daily Express We stop the traffic, park a stadium rock Funktion 1 P.A system right across the main street, set up loads of bars and invite the entire population of Mayrhofen to join the fancy dress party. The street party is one of undoubted highlights of Snowbombing. It kicks off in mid-afternoon in glorious sunshine and ends in darkness in the late evening. Fancy dress themes have included superheroes, mythical heroes, animals, inflatable Viking ships, retro-skiwear... and Bill Oddie. |

The Racket ClubAn overhead smash!"The Racket-Club opens its jaws to swallow countless bombers each night." - Notion Magazine This former underground tennis centre is completely transformed to create a 3000 capacity concert + club venue. Massive sound system, huge dance floor and a second room which could honestly not get any cooler? |
|
Mountain StageHigher than the clouds"The sun sets behind some of the most stunning scenery you're ever likely to clap your eyes on." - IDJ MagazineSnowbombing afternoons are spent beneath blue skies at 5000 feet above sea level, drinking cool golden beer, (and er eating golden chips), and being aurally massaged by the only arena which sees the stage manager leave work on a paraglider! Loose Cannons leading a mass mosh pit in the snow to Rage Against the Machine, Petty Crooks pumping out the Feel Good Tunes and Squeaky Hill running around with targets around their heads encouraging the snowball flight of the century... it's just another day at the office for the mountain stagers who catch springtime sunshine to a cheese-free mountain musical soundtrack (and if you've ever been on a normal ski holiday, you'll appreciate just what this means!)...one of the unique aspects of Snowbombing. |
|
SchlusselSauna Clubbing!Affectionately nick-named the 'sweat-box' by Snowbombing regulars this traditional wooden venue is always a favourite: yer traditional wooden Austrian alpine holiday disco with beefed up sound and lights, which results in a uniquely steamy atmosphere?

ArenaThe late, late show! One of our favourite DJ venues and always kicking until the small hours is the Arena; nestling naughtily beneath our HQ Hotel the Strass, The Arena has seen a long list of superstar DJs over the years including Tayo and his ever colourful Tracksuit Party, DJ Yoda, Jon Carter, Justin Robertson, DJ Marky, James Zabiela and many many more...and with an extended licence until 7am and extra sound in 2009, the Arena was one of the places to be. |

Sports BarIntimate and infectiousHosting apres ski fun and games on the terrace outside, followed by a line-up of fantastic live bands in the evening this centrally located and intimate venue has seen some of Snowbombings best live gigs over the past couple of years including: Eliza Doolittle, the Noisettes, The Courteeners, Lightspeed Champion, Kid Carpet, Metros and many more...Snowbombers love it because it offers a unique chance to get up-front-and-personal with all the bands who?ll be playing festival stages and huge arena?s as the summer sun climbs higher. "One of the loudest and gleefully received events of the year. Summer's going to have to pull something seriously heavy out of the bag to top this." - IDJ Magazine |

Pro-Rider Party In The ParkDon't try this at home! The park in question being the Vans Penken Park; a gravity-abusing play area comprising of more kickers than a Pub football team, a half pipe the size of Eurotunnel, genital-threatening rails and table tops of epic proportions? Watch from the of the nearby Almhof, sit back in the sun or enjoy one of Christine's perfect pizza's on the Terrace, as people invariably younger and decidedly more talented than you, show how it's done to a cool soundtrack provided by a selection of DJ's. Apart from our legendary venues, there will be lots more going around the resort so keep your eyes peeled on the website for details of Snowbombing fringe events and one off parties as we transform the whole resort into a festival site.
Every night at Snowbombing, we make sure that there is enough room across the clubs for everyone to go out and have a wicked time. 2009 saw most of the headliners play in the highest capacity Racket Club. Despite this, in some cases, our venues do get full and we have to direct Snowbombers to some of our other parties. Please bear with us on this issue... we do our utmost to make sure everyone is happy, and let's face it, we all know that nights that don't go exactly to plan often turn out to be the most memorable!

CROOKERSDrawing from influences of house, hip hop and beyond, Crookers blend their beats with the kind of fidget house finesse that gives Potty Mouth Music its soiled swagger. Since 2003, DJs Phra and Bot have been drawing upon their collective musical backgrounds to create tracks that twist, startle and surprise with synthetic pop. When the two artists met, both were trying to branch out of their genre success and explore dance music. The experiment worked.

JON CARTERJon's rise to prominence was triggered, like so many of his generation, by the Acid House revolution of 88-89 when the warehouse parties that happened nationwide suddenly made music so much more accessible than ever before. 'Women Beat Their Men' also served to bring the Carter sound to an entirely new and wider audience - something that has been reflected in the almost exponential upward curve that Jon's DJing has embarked upon in the last year. Alongside a hugely successful ongoing residencies for Bugged Out at Cream and at Fabric, Jon has recently completed a four month residency with Justin Robertson at London's Home, a slot secured after a wildly successful two week stint in Ibiza where his fired up House sets were the talk of the island.

Bitten by the bug of the Hacienda and the illegal rave warehouse parties he started Back to Basics after becoming tired of travelling long distances, and within a few months B2B had exploded onto the scene. Whilst remaining at the forefront of club promotion Dave has also been a TV presenter as well as being very busy in the studio producing records under "Out of Order."

FAT BOY SLIMHe can't sing and he doesn't write lyrics. Yet with more than 4 million albums scanned in the US and DJ gigs that have outdrawn most rock stars, Fatboy Slim has become an undeniable part of the musical backdrop. Phrases like "Right about now, the funk soul brother," "Right here, right now," and "I've got to praise you" have all become part of the vernacular. With 5 Grammy nominations (including one win) and an unprecedented 9 MTV video awards, it is little wonder that Fatboy Slim's audience crosses over into the rock, pop and dance worlds and extends from club kids up to soccer moms.

EDITORS"The second biggest British band of the decade"? (according to the Mail on Sunday (after Arctic Monkeys), Editors are an indie rock band par excellence, based in Birmingham, who formed in 2002. Editors have so far released two platinum studio albums, selling over 2 million copies between them worldwide. Their debut album The Back Room was released in 2005. It contained hits such as "Munich" and "Blood" and the following year received a Mercury Prize nomination. Their follow-up album An End Has A Start went to number 1 in the UK Album Chart in June 2007 and earned the band a Brit Awards nomination for Best British Band. It also spawned another Top 10 hit single with the release of "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors". Renowned for their explosive live performances, their appearance at Snowbombing will be an undoubted highlight...push your head to the (crisp, alpine) air! Click here to view myspace. |

DOVESA proper band! Fifteen years of honing their songwriting and evolving as a unit through wildly contrasting arena's - from the early 'nineties Madchester scene to their electrifying performance at the BBC 'Electric Proms' (Oct 2009), Melodic led (how refreshing) and unswayed by the fickle hand of fashion, the Mercury nominated Cheshire 'Doves' are no 'here today; gone tomorrow' outfit and Snowbombing offers a great opportunity to catch them live in an intimate environment...so slip into something more comfortable!

DE LA SOULLegend alert! How many acts can justifiably claim to have altered the course of their chosen musical style? Well NYC's De La Soul are in that elite. Their 1989 long player, 'Three Feet High and Rising' is required listening for anyone with an interest in hip hop and breaks. With its colorful, neo-psychedelic collage of samples and styles, plus the Long Island trio's low-key, clever rhymes and goofy humor, the album sounded like nothing else in hip-hop. Where most of their contemporaries drew directly from old-school rap, funk, or Public Enemy's dense sonic barrage, De La Soul were gentler and more eclectic, taking in not only funk and soul, but also pop, jazz, reggae, and psychedelia. With its playful wordplay, innovative sampling, and witty skits, the band's debut album has been universally hailed as a hip-hop masterpiece (voted 'Album of the Year' by NME Magazine etc). In 2006, the group won a Grammy for their collaboration with the Gorillaz on the single "Feel Good Inc." Their live performances are a hip hop history lesson...education doesn't get much more enjoyable!

Dan Le Sac VS SCROOBIUS PIPHip-hop duo, combining electronic beats with spoken word lyrics (anyone up for some cliche free rap?) The pair are Daniel Stephens (aka dan le sac; production, programming, keyboards, guitars and backing vocals), and David Peter Meads (aka Scroobius Pip; vocals/rapper). The name "Scroobius Pip" is an intentional misspelling of the Edward Lear poem, The Scroobious Pip Their first single was "Thou Shalt Always Kill", which was signed by Rob Da Banks "Sunday Best" label.? Their debut album "Angles", reached 31 in the UK album chart. Following a memorable 2009 Glastonbury Festival appearance the duo's profile is on the rise...in fact they're coming to get you!

Brian CristopherBrian Cristopher played the classical guitar as a boy (until the girls and the beers arrived on the scene). He tried to go for the acceptable career but ended up A.W.O.L with a Volkswagon Camper and a P.A. system; playing/busking his way around Europe ever since. He has performed more than 4500 gigs in Portugal,France,Italy,Holland Germany and of course Austria which is where he now lives with wife and two kids. His approach to gigs is very relaxed and raw, just an acoustic guitar and vocals, very low tech but it always seem to do work wonders. Click here to view Myspace.
